What I find most painful about this scene is that Rose has no idea what’s going on, she feels like something is off, but she doesn’t know what it is just yet. She has no idea that the man that she has fallen hopelessly in love with is going to go through such a dramatic change.
And Nine is spending the entire time just joking around, he’s trying so hard to make Rose smile so that the last thing that he sees when he goes is her smile. He can’t bear the sight of Rose getting upset, so he keeps talking like it’s just nothing. Like it’s just light banter between them, even though what’s to come will be very traumatic to Rose.
It’s this false sense of security that almost sets in before it’s ripped away from you completely.
